There is a growing trend in which parents take tiny doses of psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin in order to cope with the challenges of parenting. Is microdosing psychedelics for these reasons a breakthrough on parenting, or is it simply reckless nonsense?
A German father going by the pseudonym ‘Arno Kanter’ claims that microdosing LSD has enabled him to see things like his daughter aged 2 years and he can genuinely be enthusiastic and adventurous when he takes her out to a local park. Previously, he would feign interest in the things she pointed out and would be too exhausted after the time spent at the playground.
Other parents, both fathers and mothers, share their use of psychedelic microdoses to ease parenting. Their experiences are available on Instagram and YouTube, and online communities are mushrooming (pun intended!) around this trend. One prominent one featuring Europe-based and U.S.-based parents is “Mums on Mushrooms.” There, people freely share how microdosing elevates their energy levels and mood in ways that alcohol doesn’t, and the psychedelics they use in microdoses don’t come with the dreaded hangover that alcohol causes.
Is there any truth to these claims of microdosing helping with parenting? Gerhard Grunder doesn’t think so. He is a psychiatry and psychology expert in Germany, and he was the leader of the team that undertook the EpisoDE study, a study that investigated the role of psilocybin in treating depression. The study participants were from around the world, and this was the largest research of its kind.
Grunder asserts that since there is no study confirming any of the claims about the purported benefits of psychedelic microdosing, what people are saying about this practice can be summarized as a placebo effect in which users expect certain things to happen when they do something, and some end up experiencing those expected effects.
Tracy Lee, aged 48, admits that psychedelics helped her overcome the depression that had enveloped her after the Covid-19 pandemic upended her career and menopause set in immediately after her uterus and ovaries were removed. Lee founded Mums on Mushrooms, the online community referred to earlier.
Lee was quick to point out that psychedelics shouldn’t be seen as little helpers to mothers, but emphasized that the hallucinogens help in boosting self-awareness among users. This, she said, can be instrumental in enabling mothers deal with the overwhelm and exhaustion that comes with parenting.
It is clear that people are seeing psychedelics as a cure all, but in reality no substance or drug can help with everything. This is why psychedelic law reform is critical so that it is easier to study the effects, both good and bad, of these substances in order to enable individuals to make informed decisions. The drug development work being conducted by startups like Compass Pathways PLC (NASDAQ: CMPS) can help to clarify the therapeutic potential of these substances and make approved treatments available through the medical system. Otherwise, self-prescription without professional guidance is fraught with pitfalls that the users may be unaware of, such as the long term effects on the cardiac system.
