Licensed Hemp Farmer Accuses Canadian Bank of Illegally Closing His Account

Akeem Gardner is a licensed hemp farmer near Orangeville, Ontario.  Gardner said that his account at the TD Bank was frozen after the bank accused him of illegal activities based on his outward appearance and other false accusations. He further said that when he was dressed in business attire, the bank never flagged him, but all this changed when he tried to transfer money to a merchant three weeks ago. In an interview with BBC, Gardener, who is a 6’4 black man, was dressed in a hoodie and a toque. He adds that people from minority groups come across these…

Upsurge in Hemp Lobbying Observed After Legalization

For years, Ben Droz, alongside hemp trade association Vote Hemp, extolled the benefits of hemp along the streets of Washington, trying to rally enough support for the Industrial Hemp Farming Act, which would legalize hemp cultivation and production. Their message was simple; hemp is not the same as marijuana. They may come from the same plant species, but unlike marijuana, hemp contains minuscule levels of THC, the compound that gives users a psychoactive high when smoked or ingested. Over time, they were able to sway Former Rep. Ron Paul, Sen. Ron Wyden, and Rep. James Corner to their cause. Their…

Alabama Starts Receiving Hemp Cultivation Applications

CBD is, without a doubt, one of the most versatile medical treatments of the century. It has slowly been gaining approval among the public, who after experiencing the numerous benefits associated with the cannabinoid, have been quick to share and spread awareness on the compound. For a long time, the industry remained undeveloped primarily because CBD was classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, and it was illegal to handle it in any form. Not to mention the stigma that came with it due to its association with cannabis and its primary psychoactive agent, THC. The Farm Bill of 2018…

Processing Challenges Could Cause Billions in Losses as Hemp Rots on Farms

Farmers in the United States have adopted the cultivation of hemp due to its increased prospects and abandoned mainstream crops such as soybeans which are ensnared in trade conflicts with other countries such as China. Therefore, in search of profitable alternatives, farmers have engaged in the widespread commercial planting of hemp. Cannabidiol (CBD), a hemp compound which is a nonpsychoactive ingredient of marijuana, is at the center of the wellness industry in which beauty products and dietary supplement makers are using cannabidiol in the manufacturing process. The Food and Drug Administration has not cleared the production of CBD infused foods…

Georgia Hemp Farming Act Prompts Police to Drop Marijuana Charges

When Gov. Brian Kemp signed Georgia’s Hemp Farming Act in May, little did he know the ripple effects that this law would have regarding the prosecution of marijuana cases in the state. By law, hemp is defined as cannabis whose THC content is less than 0.3 percent while marijuana has a higher percentage of the psychoactive compound (and that is why users get high). With the enactment of the hemp cultivation law, prosecutors around the state are announcing changes to the way they handle low-level marijuana cases. For example, the Solicitor General of Gwinnett County publicly announced that the county…

Hemp Theft Continues, Even if the Crop Won’t Get People High

When industrial hemp was legalized, many farmers quickly took to the crop because of its numerous uses, including CBD extraction, textile or rope making, biofuel making and animal feed, among others. However, a raft of hemp thefts have been reported in different parts of the country and law enforcement officers believe those who steal the crop want to smoke it in order to get high. The police forces in the affected areas believe that those who are stealing hemp plants are unlikely to be individuals who want to process hemp into its different end-products since such an undertaking requires sophisticated…

Ohio Legalizes Hemp and its Derivatives

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill on Tuesday (July 30) that makes it legal for farmers in the state to grow industrial hemp and also allows manufacturers and processors to extract CBD from the crop. Speaking at the signing ceremony, DeWine said that the onus was now upon Ohio farmers to weigh their needs, assess the market for hemp, and then join the industry if they see an opportunity to make a profit. Industrial hemp contains trace amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound found in marijuana. Under the new Ohio law, hemp and its derivatives, such as CBD…
