Safety Issues to Consider Concerning Psychedelics

The debate as to whether psychedelics are safe or not has been going on for decades. As a result, many rumors and reports are surrounding these substances. Many people aren’t aware of the truth and are misinformed. Some misconceptions about hallucinogens include misinformation that psychedelics can leave a hole in your brain, or they stay in your body forever.

Such myths can lead one into making a wrong choice, and that’s why it’s necessary to be knowledgeable about the use of psychedelics. Remember that psychedelics are powerful substances and shouldn’t be misused or abused. Below are a few examples of safety issues to consider before you have a psychedelic experience.

Drug Interactions

Since psychedelics target serotonin in the brain, it’s advisable not to take them if taking other similar medications such as psychotropic drugs. Taking the two concurrently may overload the functioning of the brain, leading to more negative effects. Secondly, it’s not advisable to take psychedelics in combination with alcohol or other stimulants.

Know Your Source

There is no standard formula for preparing some of these hallucinogens, so naturally, various sources use different ingredients. You may not be sure of the components in the drug, hence don’t go for whichever source that’s available without checking if they are reputable. A drug like LSD which is chemically formulated can be risky if made by some quacks.

Diagnosed Mental Disorders

If a person has been diagnosed with a mental issue such as schizophrenia, he or she should be extra careful when handling psychedelics as the drug is not recommended for such patients. While some research is showing that not all psychedelics affect patients in the same way and that it isn’t proper to say all people with schizophrenia and other such  disorders cannot use psychedelics, it is best to proceed with caution and seek advice from your doctor.

Little Risk of Addiction

Unlike other addictive drugs like heroin and cocaine, hallucinogens have less risk of dependence. The main part of the brain associated with addiction is the dopamine system and luckily, studies show that psychedelics rarely operate on dopamine systems. The risk of developing psychological dependence is therefore minimal.

Other important things to keep in mind when taking psychedelics include:

  • It’s safer to take it in the company of others, rather than alone.
  • Not recommended for pregnant women
  • Do not operate heavy machinery, or drive

There is a lot more that is still unknown about psychedelics, and that is why nearly all industry actors like Mind Medicine (NEO: MMED) (OTCQB: MMEDF) advocate for the use of these substances in a clinical setting.
