Study Shows Psychedelic Use Could Lower Chances of Suffering Frequent Headaches

According to a recent study, individuals who have used classic psychedelics like LSD or psilocybin are less prone to episodes of bad headaches. These results, the study authors say, suggest classic psychedelics could in future be explored for their prophylactic potential against headache disorders.

The researchers at Karolinska Institutet located in Stockholm, Sweden obtained data for the period 1999-2000. This data was gathered as part of the 1958 British Child Development Study, a longitudinal cohort study tracking individuals who were born in Britain in 1958 in one week of the month of March. They specifically obtained 11,419 pieces of data on this cohort and analyzed it with attention paid to the researchers’ topic of interest.

The data was on three major questions focusing on how often individuals had experienced bad headaches, whether they had ever used LSD, and whether they had ever consumed psilocybin mushrooms (magic mushrooms, as they are colloquially referred to).

The data analysis revealed that those who had ever used classic psychedelics had a 25% lower chance of experiencing bad headaches on a frequent basis. The researchers were quick to point out that the data couldn’t be understood to mean that a causal relationship existed between the use of this category of psychedelics and the reduced frequency of bad headaches.

They posit that any number of factors could explain what they found. For example, it is feasible that the occurrence of bad headaches may deter individuals from indulging in hallucinogenic product use.

The presence of various possible explanations was supported by the data showing that people who took alcohol may experience bad headaches more frequently could be explained away by arguing that for those individuals that were frequently having bad headaches, alcohol was often abstained from since it is linked to hangovers characterized by bad headaches.

It should be noted that an analysis of the data based on sex established that female psychedelics users tended to report more episodes of bad headaches as compared to men. This draws attention to another gray area of psychedelic research; there are hardly any studies on the differences in the way psychedelics impact females or males. It is possible that psychedelics affect the sexes differently, and that could explain some observations noted.

That notwithstanding, the research team recommends additional studies to be conducted exploring the prophylactic potential of classic psychedelics with respect to headache disorders like cluster headaches and migraines.

As more people opt to self-medicate with or use psychedelics recreationally, an urgency exists to study these substances rigorously and clarify what they can or can’t do, and how exactly they work to achieve those effects. Hopefully, the work being undertaken by entities like Seelos Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: SEEL) could provide valuable answers to some of the unanswered questions about psychedelics.
